Scuba gear consists of several items. Without a scuba set or
a rebreather for breathing underwater, scuba diving wouldn’t
be possible. To stay underwater for very long requires one of
the aforementioned pieces of breathing gear.
There are two main types of scuba sets. These include the following:
• Open circuit (sometimes called the “Aqualung”
in Europe) in which the diver brings in through the set and out
through waste. This is a simple and reliable version of underwater
breathing equipment.
• The closed circuit and/or semi closed circuit which is
also referred to as the “rebreather”.
The open circuit scuba set is used far more commonly than the
rebreather. It is simpler. This open circuit version was first
invented by the well-known researcher Jacques Yves Cousteau and
Emile Gagnan. Their legacy laid the foundations for the future
of scuba diving and the scuba gear they invented is still the
model for gear used today.
